ABSTRACT

Segovia, Ramon Pocholo J., Rrebancos, Chynna Marie I., Averilla, Kevin George A. and, Alagaban, Hazel Ann A “EXTENT OF WORK-RELATED STRESS TO SOCIAL HEALTH AMONG CLINICAL INSTRUCTORS IN AQUINAS UNIVERSITY OF LEGAZPI” (An UndergraduateThesis, Aquinas University Collegeof Nursing and Health Sciences Rawis, LegazpiCity, 2010)

This study was conducted to determine extent of work related stress to social health among clinical instructors in Aquinas University of Legazpi the performance of Regular Nursing students and Second-course Nursing students of Aquinas University of Legazpi. There were 49 respondents given with a questionnaire and only 45 were retrieved. The primary data was obtained from the Clinical Instructors of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences of Aquinas University of Legazpi. To come up with a concise and reliable result, the descriptive method was used. The specific research problems addressed by this study were; 1) What are the work- related stressors affecting the social health of respondents on interpersonal and intrapersonal aspects along: a. clinical setting, b. school/ university setting, c. home setting, and d. other general setting? 2) What is the extent of the work-related stress that affects the social health of the respondents in terms of: a. clinical setting, b. school/ university setting, c. home setting, and d. other general setting? 3) What coping behaviors do they adopt to reduce work related stress? 4) What are the nursing measures that may be prepared in relation to the coping behaviors?

Based on the data presented in the preceding chapters, the findings of the study are as follows: 1) All of the presented work-related stressors are affecting the clinical instructors but to different extents 2) The “availability of hospital supplies and equipment’s necessary to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude of the students” is perceived as the most stressful for the respondents, while the perceived as the least
stressful for the respondents is “sex life”. In the clinical setting, the “availability of hospital supplies and equipment necessary to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude of the students” is perceived as the most stressful, while the “assigned schedule of duties” is perceived as the least stressful . This denotes that the clinical instructors are mostly concerned by the quality of care they are giving to the patients. The examples they manifest through their students where availability of resources is concerned, while they are already flexible to the varying schedule of duties which is one of the most valuable qualities of being a nurse. In the school setting, the “amount of salaries, wages and benefits” is perceived as the most stressful for them, while “too much workload on designated administrative position resulting to conflicts with other responsibilities” is perceived as the least stressful. This denotes that the clinical instructors are still concerned with the amount of
compensation they are being given and that they are not still satisfied with this, while they have already accepted the multiple responsibilities and obligations assigned to them by the administration together with their other responsibilities that may cause future conflicts that will test there flexibility as competent and professional CIs. In the home setting, “salaries and compensations received from work are not
commensurate to house expenditures” is perceived as the most stressful for them, while “family structure” is perceived as the least stressful. This denotes that the compensation they receive is perceived as not enough to support their expenses in the home, while they are comfortable with their family structure.

In other setting, “weather” is perceived as the most stressful for them, while “sex life” is perceived as the least stressful. This denotes that weather, as an uncontrollable stressor, is stressful for them. On the other hand they do not see sex life as a stressor. 3) “Praying”, is the most often used coping behavior by the clinical instructors in reducing work related stress, while “gambling” is the least used coping behavior. This
denotes that the clinical instructors are highly spiritual, while they see that gambling is not a helpful way in reducing their stress. 4) The research shows that the most frequently used coping behavior of the Clinical Instructors is Praying. Praying to God or to a Supreme Being helps people easily to draw stress out of their system, the researchers would like to give emphasis on how praying would be of more help to Cl.

Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: All of the presented work-related stressors are affecting the clinical instructors in different extents. The clinical instructors are greatly affected by the availability of supplies and equipment in the clinical setting, while they are least affected by the schedule of duties. The clinical instructors are greatly affected by the amount of salaries they receive in the school, while they are least affected by the assigned schedule of duties to them. The clinical instructors are greatly concerned in their home expenditures where they perceive that their salary is not enough for this, while they are happy with their family structure. The clinical instructors are greatly affected by the weather, while sex life is not a problem for them. Most clinical instructors resort to praying when confronted by stress while least of them resort to gambling.

The researchers recommend that Aquinas University should help the College of Nursing and Health Sciences obtain supplies and equipment’s needed by the clinical instructors and students in enhancing their skills and knowledge in the hospital or community setting; That Aquinas University should propose that the salaries of the clinical instructors be raised to a reasonable level to address their needs and prevent the loss of highly qualified and competent nursing instructors. The researchers also further recommend that Aquinas University should provide structures that are least likely to be affected by the= extremes of weather for the conduciveness of teaching and learning; and that Aquinas University or the College of Nursing and Health Sciences should provide seminars or talks concerning the stress encountered by the clinical instructors in a spiritual way. They can illicit help from the Center for Religious Education of the university or from the Dominican Fathers. Based on the findings obtained in the study and the conclusions drawn, the following are the recommendations forwarded:
1) Aquinas University should help the College of Nursing and Health Sciences obtain supplies and equipment's needed by the clinical instructors and students in enhancing their skills and knowledge in the hospital or community setting.
2) Aquinas University should propose that the salaries of the clinical instructors be raised to a reasonable level to address their needs and prevent the loss of highly qualified and competent nursing instructors.
3) Aquinas University should provide structures that are least likely to be affected by the
extremes of weather for the conclusiveness of teaching and learning.
4) Aquinas University or the College of Nursing and Health Sciences should provide
seminars or talks concerning the stress encountered by the CIs in a spiritual way. They
can illicit help from the Center for Religious Education.
